Born Again Quite the contrast to Dead On Arrival, Born Again, is a celebration of optimism and the rebirth of the human spirit. The lyrics and theme of this song are often assumed to mean that we are all physically reincarnated, as in the Hindu and Buddhist philosophies, or spiritually reawakened, as in the Christian faith. Clearly there is a nod to both of these philosophies interwoven in the lyrics --- particularly in the introductory verse . . . ................. I used to wonder where the people went when all their time was spent . . . ................. But now I know where they have all been sent . . . .................We only thought they went away for good . . . But we're all Born Again . . . Actually, the central theme of the song is a recognition of the rite of passage to personal independence, a breaking away from our childhood and a move toward self reliance . . . ................. This is life . . . Mama, this is mine . . . The song is a tribute to the human spirit and its ability to triumph over adversity and negative thoughts . . . .................My my, the things that fly and float inside your head ................. My my, you never die, you're never really dead ................. Don't try, you can't recall ................. Don't even know your name ................. Don't cry, accept it all ..................It's all part of the game ................. 'Cause we're all Born Again My own Mother thought that the song was a direct message to her from me! She specifically referenced the chorus in the vamp, just before the song ends. The music soars and the lyric screams out with ever increasing intensity ................. This is Life . . . ................. Mama this is mine! ................. Mama . . . hey, Mama . . . ................. Mama, this is Mine! The truth is that a lot of Mothers hear the same message when they listen to this song. Somehow, a universal, cross-cultural chord is struck. The production has a strong drum foundation. It's actually quite a simple track with a couple of guitars, an organ and some synth fills. Some of Chuck's harmonies are unusual as we recorded them at a much lower speed and then on playback they gave us a very high vocal parts. This was another track that I wrote new lyrics for Nia Peeples. The song became "Let's Fly Away", and it is a truly beautiful song with a theme quite different to the original. While the original version has some harmonies, in Nia's song, a lot of voices were added and they are positively lush. In many ways this song influenced Tom when he designed the Revisions cover. The three remaining members of Prufrock, with the fourth with us in some way, but having gone another way. |
