Now The Time Is John Capanna wrote this song and sang the lead in a style of a 1960s rabble-rouser that assumes the persona of Harold Hill, the band instrument salesman from The musical The Music Man. Now The Time Is erupts from the pulpit of a Fire and Brimstone Peace Activist beseeching his congregation to ignore the greed and the smoke and mirrors of modern politicians. Their call to action is to reflect upon and pursue the equilibrium and tranquillity that comes with the fulfilment of their own peaceful dreams. The chorus was a cast of characters that included all of the members of Prufrock,, the studio owner, his wife and kids, the horn section and anyone else in the studio at the time. It has a certain Salvation Army Band quality, with the brass section counterpointing the piano and a piccolo trumpet playing riffs as though it were a lead guitar. The bridge, with its laid back mandrigal chorus behind the solo picalo trumpet, always reminds me of a Saturday afternoon walk along the Brighton Beach pier. The song could only end in a slow fade as the preacher, and the piccolo trumpet are on a role with no ending in sight. |
