Long Hard Road Sometimes there is a lot of down-time in a studio as musicians set up equipment, or session players arrive, unpack, do their part, re-pack, and leave. And of course there are lots of technical stops and starts, parts to rehearse and so on. During one of these lulls, John Capanna was sitting alone in the studio playing an acoustic and singing to himself. He didn't know that Tom was checking a live microphone infront of him. When Tom heard what John was doing, he started recording. Long Hard Road became an ad-lib that sequed perfectly into the next tune, John Hall's Look Out Of Your Window. Look Out Of Your Window Here again is a song by John Hall that, in retrospect, might have given us some insight into his state of mind… but sometimes, to paraphrase Freud, a song is just a song, and over-analysis is just an exercise in futility and speculation. Look Out Of Your Window leaves unanswered the question of whether or not the rebuffed lover singing the song was able to rekindle the romance by changing the mind of his ex-girlfriend. It is interesting to note Hall's ad-libbed variation of the lyrics at the end of the song- "Your friend is coming ..to help you blow your mind." Tom wonders why we left it in. Who knows? The influence of the Association and other similar acts is again heard in the bridge/solo. Also the horn section provides a chorus of sound helping to power this driving track. |
